Do you want to learn how to identify the birds that flock to your backyard everyday? Or maybe you’re preparing for our annual spring fundraiser, Birdathon. Join this online course to brush up on your bird identification skills with NVBA Vice President, Andreas Seiter! During this program, your instructor will:
Review common backyard bird species you’re likely to see year-round.
Discuss migratory species that might pass through your yard this spring.
Showcase birding tools: from eBird to field guides to binoculars.
Instruct birders on how to use eBird to report birds you observe.
This program is designed for beginner birders but can also serve as a helpful refresher for more experienced birders.
About the Instructor:
Andreas Seiter, Vice President of NVBA’s Board of Directors, brings extensive experience in marketing and corporate communications to our organization. He's completed the Fairfax Master Naturalist training, which opened his eyes to the importance of seeing the connections between the easily visible elements of nature and those that are invisible or easily overlooked, but necessary to a healthy ecosystem. His work with NVBA spans educational programs, outreach, organizational development, recruitment, and fundraising. During his bird walks, Andreas encourages participants to observe their surroundings closely as a way to inspire greater appreciation and stewardship for the natural environments we all share.

About the Speaker
Lauren Taylor began her journey with invasive plants ten years ago as a volunteer helping build the new Patagonia National Park in Chile. Climate breakdown is already having significant effects on the natural environment, including serious impacts on bird populations. In this 90-minute class, Bill Young presents an overview about how birds are likely to be affected in the future and which ones are likely to be best or least able to deal with the impending changes.
The course is intended for a general audience, with no special knowledge of birds needed.
Bill Young is a writer and naturalist who lives in Kensington, Maryland. His book The Fascination of Birds: From the Albatross to the Yellowthroat, was published by Dover Publications in 2014. It explores the connections between birds and a broad range of subjects, such as biology, ecology, literature, music, history, politics, economics, religion, geography, physics, chemistry, linguistics, the visual arts, the performing arts, sports, and comedy. Bill also makes videos about natural history, and his YouTube channel has had more than a 1.25 million views.

Updated to Colt’s most recent presentation in 2026! Did you know you don’t even need binoculars to explore the big world of birds? Often it is faster and easier to identify a bird by its song – if you know how to bird by ear. In this program, Colt Gregory will:
explain the many benefits of birding by ear
introduce some of the most common birds by their songs and calls
share resources and apps to help you practice and improve your birding by ear skills.
This program is intended for beginning birders but may be a helpful refresher for more experienced birders.
Colt Gregory is a member of the Northern Virginia Bird Alliance, Northern Virginia Bird Club, and Arlington Regional Master Naturalists, serving on ARMN’s Training Committee. Colt co-leads the weekly Sunday bird walks at Great Falls National Park and leads several routes in regional Christmas Bird Counts. He enjoys hiking, camping, and birding during both. He believes that Audubon programs provide a better understanding of the relationships among plants, animals, and the environment while giving us all opportunities to volunteer, educate, and learn.

Sparrows can be difficult to identify. They are small birds that often skulk in the underbrush, and their plumage shows a very limited palette of colors. This class will help you to tell apart the sparrows you might see in northern Virginia and to separate them from other small brown sparrow-like birds.
