NABA Butterfly Count

Join the NABA Butterfly Count!

The Butterfly Count is an ongoing program of the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) that aims to census butterflies across North America (United States, Canada, and parts of Mexico) and publish the results.

Volunteer participants are assigned a 15-mile diameter count area and conduct a one-day census of all butterflies seen within that circle.

Event Details

  • Date: Saturday, Sept 13

  • Rain Date: Sunday, Sept 14 (same time)

  • Location: Each team will meet at their designated count location, to be communicated via email after team assignment

  • Time: Start times may vary depending on each leader's preference

  • Cost: NVBA is covering the $3 donation per participant this year

  • All experience levels welcome!

  • Each team will be led by an expert

  • Free Butterfly ID Webinar September 9 — highly recommended for all volunteers

  • Deadline: Thursday, September 11 at 9:00 PM

  • Teams will be assigned Friday, Sept 12

Larry Meade is president of the Northern Virginia Bird Club, a member of the NVBA Adult Education Committee and leader of numerous bird and butterfly counts, including compiler for the Alexandria Circle NABA Butterfly Count.
