McKenzie Ingram

NVBA’s Community Engagement Coordinator, McKenzie Ingram, began birding in college when a pair of Northern cardinals made her apartment balcony home in 2021. Since then, her passion for birds has only grown through exploring the many birding hotspots the DMV has to offer! McKenzie especially cherishes cavity-nesting birds and wood warblers.

At NVBA, McKenzie aims to connect folks with birds and nature through education, conservation, and community engagement opportunities. Her role directly supports NVBA’s mission to protect bird habitat, advance community-based science, and foster a diverse, inclusive community of bird enthusiasts throughout Northern Virginia. As such, she serves as the central touch point for volunteers and partners looking to join or promote community outreach activities.

McKenzie holds a Master's in Environmental Science from American University and primarily focused on the following subjects: Environmental Justice, Urban Bird Conservation, Politics of Conservation, & Activism and the Environment.

In addition to her academic experience, McKenzie has also participated in the federally permitted bird banding project known as MAPS: Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship at Patuxent Research Refuge. Under the supervision of federally permitted bird banders, McKenzie learned the proper procedures of mist-netting, how to use the Wolfe-Ryder-Pyle (WRP) bird aging system, safe bird handling practices, standardized data collection methods and more.

Previously, McKenzie served as the Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator for Anacostia Riverkeeper 501(c)(3). During this time, McKenzie managed numerous volunteer-based programs ranging from Volunteer Trash Cleanups to Educational Boat Tours. These experiences have only further deepened her passion for community-focused conservation projects.

Outside of NVBA, McKenzie leads bird walks for DC Bird Alliance, works on various craft projects, watches documentaries, and loves to hang out with her precious cat, Lil Girl.
